Tummy Tuck

Most patients who undergo a tummy tuck in Miami with Dr. Abeer Sawwaf achieve smoother, flatter and well-toned abdomens that are unachievable with diet and exercise alone.

WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

Tummy Tuck – or Abdominoplasty – is a surgical procedure used to remove excess, unneeded or unwanted skin and fat from the abdomen. Many of the patients who select abdominoplasty are of a normal body weight but have loose or sagging skin caused by genetics, aging, or certain life events like pregnancy or weight fluctuations.

  • Surgery duration: Varies.
  • Anesthesia: general anesthesia.
  • Recovery period: 2-4 weeks.
  • Final Result: Several weeks after the procedure.

You may be a candidate if:

  • You are a non-smoker.
  • And you are suffering from excess abdominal skin, perhaps due to significant weight loss or pregnancy.
  • Plus, you have realistic expectations of your outcome.

You’ll prepare for thr surgery by:

  • Undergo some laboratory tests.
  • Stop medications that increase the risk of bleeding during surgery.
  • Avoid food and drink on the day of surgery.
  • Dr. Abeer Sawwaf will administer IV sedation or general anesthesia at the start of the procedure for your comfort.
  • Then she will make a horizontal incision along your pubic hairline, where the excess fat, skin, and tissues are removed.
  • After your abdominal muscles are sutured and repaired.
  • Finally your incision closed and sutured shut.

  • When you awake, you’ll be wearing compression garments to support healing and reduce swelling.
  • You have to avoid certain physical activity in the weeks following your procedure.
  • Dr. Abeer Sawwaf will give you personalized instructions for at-home care.
  • And surly you have to schedule a return visits with Dr. Abeer to monitor your progress and removes bandages and stitches.

RESULTS:

Swelling is normal following a tummy tuck, so your final results will not be visible until several weeks after the procedure.

Not a Weight Loss Surgery

This procedure is not considered a weight loss procedure, and should not be viewed as a substitute for good diet and exercise. The actual weight of the removed tissue is almost always less than 10 pounds.

The Ideal Weight for Tummy Tuck

Patients must have a body mass index (BMI) that is below 35, and ideally less than 30. Because as BMI increases beyond 35, the final result tends not to be as good, and the risk of a complication tends to increase. If your abdomen has significant visceral adipose (fat beneath the muscle layer), muscle tightening will not be effective in the long-term. And it will bulge out again with time.

Pregnancy after Tummy Tuck

This procedure can be performed in patients who plan to have pregnancies in the future. There will be no ill-effects to the pregnancy or the baby’s growth and development, but patients should understand that pregnancy may alter their results.

Smoking and Tummy tuck

Smoking is a significant risk factor for wound healing complications; we require you to stop smoking at least 15 days prior to surgery, and not to resume during the healing period.
