Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. If you have large breasts, you might choose to have breast reduction surgery to ease discomfort or to achieve a breast size proportionate to your body.

It may also help improve your self-image and self-confidence and your ability to participate in physical activities.

If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms or conditions you may be considered a good candidate for reduction mammoplasty:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to one’s body size.
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain caused by heavy breasts
  • Grooves in shoulders caused by tight bra straps
  • Poor posture due to breast size
  • Heavy breasts that droop significantly, with downward pointing nipples and areolas
  • Breasts that are not equal in size (one significantly larger than the other)
  • Rashes and/or infection affecting the skin trapped beneath one’s breasts
  • Inability to participate in athletic/physical activities due to breast size
  • Feelings of self-consciousness regarding breast size

If you regularly experience one or more of these symptoms, a breast reduction procedure may bring you tremendous relief.

Following the procedure:

Your breasts will be in correct proportion to your body size. Aside from alleviating uncomfortable symptoms, the surgery can enhance the shape and appearance of your breasts and greatly improve the comfort and fit of your clothing.

There are various different ways to do a breast reduction. Dr. Abeer Sawwaf will decide which is the most appropriate for you depending on the size of your breasts and the desired outcome.

There are two most common types of incisions:
  • Anchor type or inverted T reduction results in an anchor-shaped scar starting around the areola, travelling vertically down and then horizontally across the breast crease.
  • Vertical pattern breast reduction results in a circular scar around the areola, and a vertical scar passing down the breast.

Excess skin and breast tissue are removed during the procedure. The remaining breast tissue is reshaped to create smaller and perkier breasts.

You will be required to wear a supportive bra at all times for several weeks after surgery and monitor incision sites for any appearance of infection during the procedure recovery time. Taking care of the incisions correctly and avoiding infection can help to reduce the appearance of the scars over time and shorten healing time.
